Nine of the ten results for SEO in Farnham on 13 October 2026 are agencies or consultants, and every one of them will promise you page one. The way to pick without being sold to is one question, asked of each: show me one Farnham client's Google Search Console graph for the last year. The firms that can, within minutes, go on the shortlist. The rest do not, whatever their site says. This article gives you the Farnham numbers, the test, and a way to judge the three promises every agency makes.
What picking wrong costs you
An SEO retainer is a monthly bill against a promise. If the promise is rankings, you can be paying for something that produces no customers. Here is a worked example, labelled as an example, with a verified job value. A plumber in Farnham charges £80 to £150 a call-out; take £115. Whatever the retainer is, write it into the sum and it tells you how many extra jobs a month the work has to produce before it is paying for itself.
Example: retainer each month divided by £115 = extra call-outs a month needed to break even A retainer twice a call-out needs 2 extra jobs a month. One that is ten times needs 10.
Now ask the harder question. How would you know? If nobody counts calls from the site, and nobody matches those calls to jobs, the retainer is being judged on a ranking report and the number above is never checked. Twelve months of that, for a business whose Farnham search was always going to be small, is the real cost of picking on the pitch.
The reverse is also true and worth saying plainly. A roofer whose site wins one extra roof a year has covered most retainers from a single job, because a new roof averages £8,000 and ranges from £4,000 to £19,000. The right agency for a roofer is not the cheapest; it is the one that can prove the extra roof happened. That is why the test below is about evidence, not price.
What the Farnham data says
All figures are searches a month on the UK 2026 run-rate from Google Ads data, as at 13 October 2026. Web design farnham and website design farnham each see 125 searches; web designer farnham 55; seo farnham 54; marketing agency farnham 19; seo services farnham, seo agency farnham and web development farnham 10 each. Google values a click on web design farnham at £15.80, which tells you agencies are paying to be found here. Farnham is a mid-sized Surrey market for our trade: behind Guildford (312) and Camberley (169), close to Woking (139).
Here is page one for seo farnham, searched from Farnham on the same date:
| Position | Result | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Total SEO | SEO company page for Farnham |
| 2 | Smarter Media | SEO agency page for Farnham |
| 3 | Artemis | SEO services in Farnham |
| 4 | MacPC Farnham | Digital marketing, SEO, social, design |
| 5 | Webseka | SEO and website design Farnham |
| 6 | webdesignsurrey.net | "Rank #1 on Google and AI search" |
| 7 | BusinessMagnet | Directory page for Stevenage |
| 8 | Castle Street Media | SEO services in Farnham |
| 9 | TekHive | SEO Farnham |
| 10 | Yell | Directory listing |
Two things stand out. First, this is a crowded page: nine firms have written a Farnham SEO page, which is far more than you find in Leatherhead, Walton or Staines, where page one is directories and out-of-area firms. Farnham agencies compete hard for 54 searches a month. Second, ranking their own page for seo farnham is the one thing every firm on that list has proved. It proves nothing about what they would do for a Farnham plumber, dentist or solicitor. Their own site is the one client they will always prioritise.
The People Also Ask box on that search, Google's list of the related questions people type, is telling: "How much should I expect to pay for SEO?", "How much does SEO typically cost in the UK?", "Is SEO still worth it in 2026?" and "Is SEO being phased out?". Searchers in Farnham are worried about price and about whether the whole thing still works. The answers are in the FAQ below, and in our guide to what an SEO consultant actually does.
For the record, Bad Boy Labs is not on that page. We are based across the county around Shepperton and Weybridge, and this article exists to help a Farnham owner choose well, including choosing one of the nine.
The three promises, tested
Every agency pitch makes three promises. Each can be tested with the same three questions: what does that mean, how do you know, and why does it matter to my money.
Promise 1: "We will get you on page one"
What it means. Page one of Google for some search. Always ask which. Page one for "best plumber in farnham surrey hills area" is worthless if nobody types it. Page one for plumber farnham is worth something only if the number of searches is real; ask for it.
How you know. Only one source counts: Google Search Console, Google's free report of which searches your site appears for, where, and how often it is clicked. A ranking tool screenshot is a guess. A Search Console graph is the record.
Why it matters. Rankings are a means. If the page ranks and the phone does not ring, you are paying for a position. The question is whether the position produced calls.
Promise 2: "We will get you more traffic"
What it means. More visits to the site. Ask from which searches. Traffic from "how to fix a dripping tap" is not a customer. Traffic from plumber farnham is.
How you know. Search Console shows clicks by query. Google Analytics shows visits by page. Ask to see both for a current client, with the name hidden, and look at which queries the clicks came from.
Why it matters. Traffic is a cost until it converts. A page that gets 500 visits and no calls has an expensive problem: it is either the wrong traffic or the wrong page. A good agency will say which before you sign.
Promise 3: "We will get you more leads"
What it means. More phone calls, forms and bookings from people who want the service. This is the only promise that is actually about your business.
How you know. Call tracking (a separate number on the site that forwards to your line and logs each call), form notifications, and a monthly count matched to jobs won. If the agency does not propose counting leads, it is not promising leads; it is promising rankings and hoping.
Why it matters. Leads are the number that goes in the sum at the top. Nothing else does.
Your three options
Option 1: Do it yourself, with a free toolkit
What it means. Claim your Google Business Profile, write one page for each service and for Farnham, set up Search Console, and spend one hour a month reading it. No agency.
How you know it works. For a one-service, one-town business the search is small enough that a specific page and a well-kept Google listing with reviews can take the map pack and a page-one spot on their own. The mechanism is the same one agencies use; they just do it faster.
Where it falls down. Time and attention. Writing honest pages takes evenings. Most owners stop at one. And if the search for your trade in Farnham is crowded, as it is for SEO itself, a part-time effort will not beat a firm doing it full time.
Right for: a single-service business in one town with a quiet competitive page and someone willing to do the work. If that is you, do this and skip the agency; it is the honest answer.
Option 2: Hire one of the nine, after the Search Console test
What it means. Shortlist the Farnham firms that pass the test, agree a lead count as the measure, and sign for an initial term with a review date.
How you know it works. The Search Console graph for a current Farnham client is the proof: twelve months of impressions and clicks rising on searches that matter to that client. If a firm can show three of those, it can probably do it for you.
Where it falls down. SEO on a brochure site is slow, because the site has nothing for Google to rank. If your site has one page and the phone number in the footer, the first three months of any retainer will be spent fixing structure that should have been built in. And a firm that measures itself on rankings will report rankings; you have to insist on leads in the contract.
Right for: a business with a sound site, a contested search and a job value that justifies a retainer. Many Farnham businesses fit.
Option 3: Rebuild the site as a conversion system, then do the SEO on top
What it means. A site planned from the search data: one page per service and per town where the searches justify it, the offer and a tap-to-call number on the first screen of a phone, proof near the ask, call tracking and a short form. SEO then has something to work with. This is what we build at Bad Boy Labs, described on our websites page, with the search side on our SEO page.
How you know it works. Month one of the Walk On The Wild Side pet shop site brought 1,500 visits, 75% from Google, with 39 enquiries, around 20 sales and 8 reservations. Structure first, then search, measured from the start.
Where it falls down. It is the most expensive route up front and is wasted on a business that is full or whose search is tiny. If your existing site already has the right pages and only lacks the ongoing work, option two is cheaper and we would say so.
Right for: a business with a one-page or template site, several services or towns to win, or paid adverts that land on pages that do not convert.
The recommendation
Bottom line: run the Search Console test on every firm you are considering, including us, and sign only with one that agrees to be judged on counted leads.
The reason is money. The sum at the top only works if someone counts the jobs. A firm that shows you a real client's graph and agrees to count your leads has tied its fee to your revenue. A firm that shows a ranking screenshot and promises page one has tied its fee to a number you cannot spend. For a small, uncontested search, do it yourself. For a contested one with a sound site, hire a tested agency. For a brochure site, fix the site first or the retainer is spent on building, not ranking.
How to do it this week
- Monday, 15 minutes: get your numbers. Open Google Ads Keyword Planner (free with a Google Ads account, no spend needed). Enter your trade plus Farnham, plus Aldershot, Farnborough and Haslemere. Note each monthly figure. "Done" is four numbers and a sense of which searches are worth paying to win.
- Monday, 10 minutes: see who holds your search. On your phone, search your trade plus Farnham. Screenshot the map pack and page one. Count real local competitors with a real page. Three or more means contested; fewer means open and perhaps a do-it-yourself job.
- Tuesday, 20 minutes: set up Search Console if you have not. Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your site, verify it (the DNS or HTML-tag method; your web host can help). "Done" is the Performance report showing data. If an agency later refuses to work from this, that is your answer.
- Tuesday, 30 minutes: write the one email. Send it to every firm on your list, including the nine above if you like: "Please send a Search Console performance graph for one Farnham client over the last 12 months, name hidden, and tell me which searches the clicks came from. Also, how will you count the leads my site produces each month?" Paste the same text to each. "Done" is the email sent.
- Thursday: sort the replies. A graph with query detail: shortlist. A ranking-tool screenshot, an award logo, or a reply that moves to a call before answering: cut. A refusal citing confidentiality with no anonymised alternative: cut. "Done" is a shortlist of one to three.
- Friday, 30 minutes: agree the measure before the price. With each shortlisted firm, agree in writing what counts as a lead (a tracked call over 30 seconds, a form, a booking), who counts it, and the monthly report format. Only then discuss money. Put a review at three months in the agreement.
- Every month, 15 minutes: read the two numbers. Leads counted and jobs won from them. Rankings are the agency's business. Those two are yours.
Mistakes we see
- Choosing by the agency's own ranking. Being first for seo farnham proves they can rank themselves. Ask for a client's graph.
- Signing for rankings. If the contract measures positions, you will get positions. Measure leads.
- Buying SEO for a brochure site. One page, no town pages, number in the footer. Three months of the retainer go on structure. Fix the site first.
- Paying to rank for Surrey. "Plumber surrey" has 420 searches a month and every plumber in the county is after it. "Plumber farnham" is closer to the people who will actually book you.
- Never opening Search Console yourself. It is free, it is Google's own record, and reading it for ten minutes a month is how you keep any agency honest.
Want me to run the test on your shortlist?
Send me the names of the Farnham firms you are considering and your trade. I will tell you what to ask each one, what a good answer looks like for your search, and whether your current site is sound enough for a retainer to work on. If the honest answer is "one of the nine will do this well, hire them", I will say so. If it is "do it yourself for six months first", I will say that. Shall I run the test on your list, or will you send the one email yourself on Tuesday?
