A small business in Woking should do three things first: fix its Google Business Profile so it wins the Woking map pack, write one page that answers the exact question Woking customers type, and collect reviews that name the town. Ignore link-buying, keyword tools and anything sold as "SEO Woking", because almost nobody searches for that, while nearly a thousand people a month search for a Woking dentist and five hundred for a Woking plumber.

The problem in your money

Woking is the busiest town in north-west Surrey for the searches that matter to a trade or a practice. The customers are typing the town name. The question is whether they find you or the directory sites that currently fill page one. Here is a worked example for a plumber. The search volume is real (UK, 2026 run-rate). The call-out value is verified at £80 to £150. The click and booking rates are assumptions for the example; put your own in.

"plumber woking": 508 searches a month
x 15% who click the first ordinary result (assumption)
= 76 visits a month
x 20% who ring (assumption) = 15 calls
x 50% booked (assumption) x £100 call-out (verified range £80 to £150)
= £750 each month from one page, before the repair work that follows a call-out

Run the same sum for a dentist and the numbers get bigger, because "dentist woking" is 992 searches a month and a new patient is worth years of check-ups, not one visit. For an estate agent, "estate agent woking" is 708 searches a month and one instruction is a four-figure fee. What does that mean in plain terms? The demand is in Woking already. SEO, which is simply the work of being the answer Google shows, decides who gets it.

Read those two tables together. Customers in Woking generate 2,758 searches a month across just six trades. Business owners in Woking generate 51 searches a month for anything with "SEO" in it. We will be honest: the phrase in this article's title is searched 14 times a month. The point of the article is not that phrase. It is that the customers are searching and most Woking firms are not showing up for them.

How do you know they are not showing up? Look at who holds page one for "web design woking" today: Indigo Marmoset at number one, then Yell, BusinessMagnet, a Surrey agency, Cylex, Fourseven Media, Bluebell, Yell again, Cylex again and Red Sentence. Five of the ten results are directories, which are sites that list other businesses rather than being one. When directories hold a page one, it means the real businesses in that trade have not written a page good enough to beat a listing. That pattern repeats across trades in Woking. A directory listing is a thin page. A proper page about your work in Woking beats it.

Why does it matter? Because a directory sends the customer to a list of your competitors. Your own page sends them to your phone number.

Three ways to get found in Woking

Option 1: Do it yourself with a checklist

What it means: an hour on your Google Business Profile, an afternoon on one page of your website, and a review request to your last ten customers. How you know it works: the map pack, which is the three-business block at the top of a local search, is ranked on relevance, distance and prominence. A correct category, a Woking pin and reviews that name Woking hit all three. Where it falls down: you have to actually do it, and keep doing it monthly, and most owners stop after week two. Who it is right for: any Woking trade or practice with one location and an owner who can write a plain paragraph.

Option 2: Hire an SEO agency

What it means: a monthly retainer for an agency to do option 1 and then keep going into content, technical fixes and links. How you know it is an option: "seo agency surrey" gets 182 searches a month, so plenty of firms do it. Where it falls down: with 12 searches a month for "seo agency woking", no agency builds its business on Woking, so you will be hiring a Surrey, Guildford or London firm whichever way you search. That is fine, but judge them on one question: will they report calls and enquiries from Woking, or rankings for phrases nobody types? And never pay for links. We explained why in are backlinks worth paying for. Who it is right for: a practice or firm with more than one service and no time, where one new client a month pays the retainer several times over.

Option 3: Skip SEO and buy Google Ads

What it means: pay per click to appear above the map pack for "plumber woking" or "dentist woking". How you know the cost: the figures in the first table are real Google Ads costs per click. A plumber pays about £9.83 a click, a dentist £4.47, an electrician £7.42. Where it falls down: the clicks stop the day the budget stops, and a click is not a call. If one in ten clicks phones you, a plumber is paying roughly £98 per call before winning the job. Ads also do nothing for the map pack or the ordinary results, so you are renting the position, not earning it. Who it is right for: a new business with no reviews and no page yet, that needs calls this month while the slower work takes hold. We covered the trap of paying for calls that ring out in Google Ads and missed calls.

The recommendation

Bottom line: do option 1 this week, and decide about option 2 or 3 in three months with real numbers in front of you. The reason is cost against return. Option 1 costs a day of your time and nothing else. For the example plumber it competes for 508 searches a month, with a verified call-out of £80 to £150 on every booking. Ads would cost that plumber about £9.83 a click for the same searches. An agency should only be hired to do the things you cannot, after the free things are done, otherwise you are paying a retainer for someone to fill in your opening hours.

How to do it this week

  1. Claim and fix your Google Business Profile. Go to business.google.com. Check the business name is your trading name with no towns added. Set the primary category to the thing customers ring you for: "Plumber", "Dentist", "Electrician", "Estate agent", "Accountant". If customers visit you, show the address. If you go to them, hide the address and set the service area to Woking plus the places you actually cover: West Byfleet, Byfleet, Knaphill, Horsell, St John's, Brookwood, Old Woking. Done looks like: name, category, hours and phone number all correct and matching the website.
  2. Write one Woking page on your website. Create a page with the heading "Plumber in Woking" (your trade, your town). First paragraph: what you do, which parts of Woking you work in, one real job you did there. Then the three questions customers ask most, each as a heading with a short answer beneath. Phone number visible without scrolling. Done looks like: a page a Woking resident could read and know you are local, not a template with the town name dropped in.
  3. Link the page from your homepage and your profile. Add it to your main menu or an "Areas" section. On the profile, set the Website field to that page if Woking is your main town, or add it as a service link. Done looks like: Google can reach the page in one click from both places.
  4. Ask ten customers for a review that names Woking. Copy the review link from your profile (Home, then "Ask for reviews"). Send it by text with one line: "If you can, say what we did and where." Done looks like: five new reviews within two weeks, at least two mentioning Woking or a part of it.
  5. Check the directories that outrank you. Search your trade plus Woking. For each directory on page one (Yell, Cylex, BusinessMagnet), claim your free listing and make the name, address and phone number match your profile exactly. Done looks like: the same details everywhere; no paid upgrades.
  6. Measure for 90 days. In your profile, open Performance. Write down calls, website clicks and direction requests today. Check the same three numbers on the first of each month. Done looks like: three dated rows in a notebook. If calls have not moved in 90 days, something in steps 1 to 4 was not finished.

What to ignore

  • Anyone selling "SEO Woking" rankings. Fourteen people a month search it. Ranking for it wins you nothing. Ask for calls from Woking customers instead.
  • Keyword tools and monthly ranking reports. You have six phrases that matter: your trade plus Woking, and your trade plus the two or three neighbouring places. You can check those by hand.
  • Buying links or directory "premium" listings. A paid Yell upgrade puts you higher on Yell. It does not move your own page on Google.
  • A blog about industry news. Nobody in Woking is searching for your take on regulations. They are searching for a plumber. Write the Woking page first.
  • Rebuilding the website before the profile is right. The profile wins the pack. The page wins the results beneath it. Do them in that order. If you do need a site, our SEO page explains how the two fit together.

Mistakes we see

  • Woking in the business name. "Smith Plumbing Woking" on the profile when the van says "Smith Plumbing" is a naming violation and a suspension risk.
  • A Surrey page instead of a Woking page. Customers type the town, not the county. "Plumber surrey" is 420 searches a month across the whole county; "plumber woking" is 508 in one town.
  • Stopping at week two. Reviews and the Performance check are monthly habits. The firms that win the pack are the ones still asking for reviews in month six.
  • Judging by rankings instead of calls. Position three for a phrase nobody types is worth nothing. Count the calls.
